So, in a teeny weeny town in Florida, one morning (New Year's Day, to be exact) the sun doesn't rise, and every teenager between 13 and 18 years old wakes up the next morning - in the dark - to find everyone else disappeared. It would be all fine and dandy, you know. Most people are mature enough to take care of themselves at this age. But why didn't the sun rise?
Every teenager is now left to the mercy of the night. Soon enough, plants die, it gets colder and colder, and people begin to wonder why nobody's come and talked to them. Are they abandoned? Some have read the book Gone, and they go and look for a border of a sort, but there is none. Some expect that they've just been abandoned - it's like the movie Saw, it's just a test. Some know better, and know that they're the only ones in the world, and nobody's coming back.
Kids begin to accumulate odd powers and give themselves names.
The teens break into two groups - the Moonbeams and the Nightwalkers.
The Moonbeams live in all the natural places - the beach, the forest: anywhere not manmade. They being to believe in their own god, Luna, who controls the moon and the water. They also believe that they were abandoned by anyone but themselves because they deserved it, and they need to learn how to embrace the natural world in order to survive. They're all about living together, working together, romance, and reproduction. Their four leaders - Cupid, Sunny, Cloud, and Dog - are fair and just, as well as strict and rule-enforcing. Their rules? No communicating with Nightwalkers, no ravaging from buildings humans have left behind, and no hurting the trees.
The Nightwalkers are those who have embraced the arts and manmade things their whole lives, and they live in human habitats and take things left behind. They still believe in the original Christian God, and hold mandatory services every Sunday. They allow drugs and drinking, but taboo sex and stealing. Their four leaders - Picasso, Oz, Mozart, and Quill - are strict and harsh, and diabolical as well, always working together and trying to find new ways to impress their subjects. Their punishments are rough and sometimes violent. Their rules? No communicating with Moonbeams, stay within city limits, and don't hurt or steal from each other.
So how do you live in a world with no cell phones, no internet, not even electricity to keep you warm?
You bathe in the moonlight.
